Good morning, Bengaluru ☀️
Expect a generally cloudy sky with light rain today, with temperatures between 21°C and 30°C - carry an umbrella, not a raincoat.
Here's one for the group chat: this city once had its own helicopter taxi. From 2018, a chopper service ran commuters from the airport straight into the city in 15 minutes flat, a trip that takes two hours by road - for about ₹4,130 a seat. It quietly stopped flying, but somewhere out there is a Bengalurean who beat the ORR by air.
☕ Bengaluru Trivia
Which Bengaluru neighborhood hosted the city’s first electric streetlights in 1905?
Answer at the end.
The Big Bengaluru Update
Why can't you take your bike on Airport Road anymore?
Bengaluru Traffic Police has banned two-wheelers and passenger autorickshaws on the International Airport Road elevated corridor between Sanjeevanagar Cross and Vidyashilp Junction, along with three other flyovers - the BGS Flyover, Peenya Elevated Corridor, and the Silk Board -Ragigudda Double-Decker. Goods vehicles also face timing restrictions. Electronics City's corridor gets the same treatment from September 11.
Police cite accident severity and breakdown-related congestion as the reasoning; it's a trial, with impact to be reviewed before anything's made permanent.
If you ride to the airport or Electronics City, budget extra time on the service road starting now. In more transit news: the Pink Line's elevated Bannerghatta Road stretch is still waiting on its final signelling certificate, so don't retire that cab app just yet.
Startup Watch
Bengaluru-based Kepler Aerospace raised $8M in seed funding this week, led by Blue Ashva Capital with Finvolve and India Accelerator joining in.
The space-infrastructure startup builds autonomous mission operations tech and plans to use the money to launch its first six satellites, build a bigger mission-control facility in Whitefield's aerospace hub, and hire 40 more space-tech specialists. Quiet corner of the city, increasingly loud ambitions.
Worth the Hype?
Betta Restobar, Sadashivanagar
After starting life in Mangalore, Betta has landed in the Garden City with coastal Karnataka classics: calamari coconut thecha roast, pomfret fry, and a ghee-roast pizza that shouldn't work but does.
One Hidden Recommendation
Select Book Shop, Brigade Road
Tucked on a lane just off the bustle, this 70-year-old secondhand bookstore has been run by the same family since 1945.
