Power Bills Are Going Up in Bengaluru, Here’s What It Means for You

From May 1, electricity bills in Bengaluru will include an additional 56 paise per unit as a “true-up” charge to recover a ₹2,068 crore shortfall from the previous year. This extra cost will be spread over 12 months, so it won’t feel like a sudden spike but will steadily increase your monthly bill.

For an average household using around 200 units, this means roughly ₹100–₹120 more per month, with higher usage leading to bigger increases. This comes on top of earlier tariff hikes, making electricity noticeably more expensive overall. The hike is mainly due to higher power purchase costs and rising demand, with the burden now being passed on to consumers.

👉 What you can do:
Keep an eye on high-consumption appliances, switch to energy-efficient options, and try shifting heavy usage to off-peak hours where possible.

How One Bengaluru Designer Built a Simple Tool to Fight Garbage Dumping

Jyothish V M, a 31-year-old product designer, built a platform called NammaKasa to make reporting garbage issues quick and easy. He started building it on April 4, and it went live within 4 days. The response was massive:

  • 🗑️ 1,249 complaints reported

  • 📍 BTM Layout: 227 cases

  • 📍 Shivajinagar: 127 cases

  • Only 7 resolved so far

The platform is designed to remove friction, no login, no app, and reports can be filed in under 30 seconds. For Jyothish, the idea was simple: people don’t act because systems are complicated. Make it easy, and more people will participate.

His bigger goal? Not just solving complaints, but building a stronger sense of civic responsibility in the city.
